Both locally and across the nation, Cox Business shows their dedication to supporting small businesses.
Over the past four years, Cox Business has been giving entrepreneurs and small business startups the chance to pitch their ideas in a fast-paced, “Shark Tank”-style event called Get Started. Cox Business has hosted Get Started in Gainesville for the past three years and encourages entrepreneurship nationwide. Get Started is a competition that gives five finalists the opportunity to pitch their idea for a prize package and the guidance of blue-chip experts who can help competitors turn big ideas into a revenue-generating success.
“We continue to host these Get Started events because we believe in the small business and startup community,” said Ken Kraft, the senior vice president of Cox Business Marketing. “We see it in Gainesville and we see it all over the country — there are some amazing ideas that are being pitched at these events. Ideas that can solve real business and community challenges.”
In the last three years in Gainesville, Cox Business has been able to honor three unique, local startups and 15 finalists from the community. The 2015 Get Started Gainesville winner was Grammar Songs, a musical learning company created by a local teacher. Originally a way to teach grammar to children, Grammar Songs has evolved to include many academic subjects. In 2016, Cox Business honored Dycap Media Solutions, a company that automates cameras using facial recognition to remove the need for camera operators. Most recently, Cocovana by Sheldon Barrett was selected as the 2017 Get Started winner. Barrett developed the “Coconut Twist,” a tool that allows anyone to safely open coconuts in seconds.
The 15 local finalists from previous years are as diverse as the winners, and range from 2015 finalist Livingua, an app that connects travelers to locals who know the language and the culture, to 2017 finalist AuxThera, LLC, a three-part program for pet owners to provide solutions for pet weight loss.
Around the nation, Cox has awarded The Read Read as winner of the 2017 Get Started Rhode Island and Revive Brand Co. as the winner of 2017 Get Started Las Vegas. The Read Read is a literacy tool for the visually-impaired and blind, and Revive Brand Co. produces sports apparel and bags.
Cox Business hosts Get Started in more than nine markets around the nation, as part of their commitment to supporting entrepreneurship. These locations include Gainesville, Florida, Tucson, Arizona and Tulsa, Oklahoma, to name a few.
“Entrepreneurship is strong in America and that spirit is alive and well in Gainesville,” said Kraft. “It is vital to the business community here.”
