Achieving plump, youthful looking skin can be tough when dealing with the stresses of daily life. On my quest for healthier skin, I visited Dermacare Laser and Skin Care Clinic and was pleasantly surprised by my findings. After being greeted like an old-time friend, Elizabeth Lee, a medical aesthetician, and Nicole Coullias, a medical aesthetician and certified medical electrologist, gave me a tour of the spa-like clinic.
Later, we sat down — the soothing smell of lavender in the air — and they answered some of my questions regarding skincare.
What are some DOs and DON’Ts of your skincare routine?
Always use a toner. A toner is especially important because it brings the skin back to its natural pH level. This actually takes the skin up to an hour on its own. When your skin is at its natural pH, products can properly penetrate, allowing them to live up to their full potential.
Use cosmetics that are made from true minerals and botanicals and have the least amount of parabens and additives. For years, my favorite has been the Jane Iredale Mineral Cosmetics line. Described in one word…amazing! It’s one of the only makeup brands that actually helps your skin, has SPF and will not grow acne-causing bacteria in its containers.
When washing your face, always do two cleanses. The first will allow the initial makeup, dirt and oil to be washed away while the second will clean up any leftover residue.
Clean your makeup brushes once a week. This will help get rid of any acne-causing bacteria accumulating on your brushes and help your brushes deliver the proper coverage you are looking for.
Always wear sunscreen! Whether it’s just a walk to the mailbox or a long walk on the beach, you are exposed to the sun. The sun is the number-one cause of aging skin.
Never mix your products with the palms of your hands. Use the tips of your fingers instead to blend in products. The palms of your hands are very porous and can soak up a lot of your product.
Don’t wear makeup to the gym or to an event where you will be sweating. Sweating and heat open your pores and allow debris and toxins on the surface of the skin to penetrate your pores.
Don’t wear makeup to bed. This is the time you should be allowing your skin to breathe in its natural state — I can’t stress this one enough!
What foods help to support healthy skin?
Many of the nutrients and “good” fats we eat as part of a healthy diet can enhance the skin’s elasticity and help to create that healthy, appealing glow we all seek. Eating fruit and vegetables in their fresh, raw form provides more antioxidants than when cooked.
Blueberries: Rich with Vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps fight the signs of aging.
- Fish and Avocados: Rich with Omega-3 fatty acids, which are a great source of oil to the skin without clogging your pores. Whether by food or by supplement, Omega-3s are great for your skin, nails and hair.
Water: Your skin will not look plump or glow if you are dehydrated.
- Green Tea: Contains antioxidants, which may fight the effects of aging. Drinking it is also a good way to stay hydrated.
Sweet Potatoes: Rich with Vitamin A, which helps reduce wrinkles.
Broccoli and Other Green Leafy Vegetables: Contain Vitamins A and C that help fight fine lines and wrinkles. With vegetables, a good rule of thumb is to think, “the darker the better.”
Replace Bad Oils with Better Oils: Use extra-virgin olive oil, sesame seed oil, or grape seed oil instead of vegetable, corn, safflower and canola oil.
What are some lunch-time procedures that would not involve a lot of down time?
Laser Genesis: Laser Genesis is a wonderful procedure that requires no down time. The heat of the laser stimulates collagen growth, reduces redness and kills acne bacteria on the surface of the skin. You can put your makeup on after the procedure and go back to your day with little to no redness.
Microdermabrasion: A non-crystal, microdermabrasion treatment utilizes a diamond-encrusted tipped wand to deliver a wonderful exfoliation, enabling the skin to glow and properly absorb products.
Twenty-Percent Honey Lactic Peel: This is a “glow peel” and is wonderful for that event or date — or when you need a little skin refresher. This peel gives you the glow you are looking for without the hassle of peeling for days before an event.
Facials: Whether you choose our popular Dermacare Signature Facial or one of our more extensive and extravagant facials, you are sure to leave looking great! But be warned…you may not want to return to work after your 50 minutes of relaxing bliss.
Other Lunch-Time Procedures: Of all the treatments performed by our nurse practitioners, ranging from dermal fillers and laser treatments to eliminating brown spots, facial veins, redness, unwanted hair, wrinkles and tattoos, a Botox procedure is the easiest to fit in over a lunch break — and no one will know your secret! We offer free consultations to answer all your questions and find the right procedure for your skin. Give us a call. You will love our clinic for both its professionalism and family feel!
